Overview
If you're thinking about a trip that gets to Nepal, this 5-day Kathmandu and Nagarkot plan we've pulled together! It’s just a brilliant way to properly soak in that ancient, almost timeless vibe of the Kathmandu Valley and then get your socks knocked off by a Himalayan sunrise.
Just think, you’re there, stepping into places like Pashupatinath Temple, feeling that incredible energy around the massive Boudhanath Stupa, and just wandering, almost getting lost, in those amazing old courtyards of Patan Durbar Square. These aren't just some tourist spots; they’re like living, breathing history. And having one of our local folks there with you, showing you around, plus your car, so you’re not stressing about getting from one place to another. It just makes everything smoother, and you get so much more out of it, the real stories. If you're new to Nepal or just someone who loves to get right under the skin of a place's past, this bit alone is worth it.
Then, we head for the hills: Nagarkot. It’s such a good breather from the buzz of the city and the views. Waking up to see the sunlight blaze across those giant snow-capped peaks, and Mt. Everest often makes an appearance, it’s just one of those moments that makes you go "wow." And coming back down, we’ll take you through the ancient Changu Narayan Temple, which is a real gem, often missed, and then into Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Walking into Bhaktapur feels like you’ve stepped onto a movie set from centuries ago – it’s that incredible.
Route Description
When you first hit Kathmandu, don't try to do everything at once. Feel it out. The air’s different, the sounds, everything. Let it sink in a bit. We’ll make sure you’re comfy and starting to get the vibe of the place.
Then we’ll get into it. We'll wander over to Pashupatinath Temple. It’s hard to explain, but you feel the history there, by that sacred river, the Bagmati. Powerful for Hindus and Buddhists alike. Then, head toward Boudhanath. It’s just huge, this massive white dome, prayer flags everywhere, incredibly calming, honestly. And Patan Durbar Square, it’s like walking through a storybook; the woodwork, the little details on the old palaces, just stunning. As the light starts to fade, we're off to Nagarkot Hill. Your quiet spot for the night.
You have to get up for the sunrise at Nagarkot. If the weather plays ball, watching the Himalayas light up gold and Everest peeking through. Breakfast with that view still buzzing in your head. Then, it's down to Changu Narayan Temple in Bhaktapur. It's like the whole place is breathing history: ancient temples and bustling little squares. It’s not just old stones; it’s alive. By late afternoon, we’re back in Kathmandu, and the evening’s yours to do your own thing.
More cool stuff is coming. We'll pop over to Swoyambhunath – the Monkey Temple! And yeah, the monkeys are hilarious, proper little characters. But the temple itself, the mix of faiths, and the views over the city from up there are brilliant. Then, Kathmandu Durbar Square. This is where the kings used to live! The whole place just buzzes with stories. And seeing the Kumari, the living goddess, is something you won’t forget. The rest of the day, it’s your call. Dive into the markets, grab a coffee, and just wander. And to say a proper cheers to an amazing trip, we’ll do a big traditional Nepali farewell dinner. Good food, a bit of music, and some dancing – the real deal. It’s our way of saying thanks for coming.
When it’s time to fly out, we’ll get you to the airport. Look, these five days, it’s not just a checklist of sights. It’s the little things, the feeling of the place, the smiles, the mountains just being there. You’ll take a bit of Nepal’s heart home with you. It’s one of those trips that just sticks with you.

Good to Know
Best Time to Visit
Autumn (think October, November):
During the autumn season, the air gets super clear, like properly sharp. This means your chances of actually seeing those big snowy peaks, especially from Nagarkot, are way better. You know, for that Everest glimpse you're hoping for, clear skies are your friend! It's often when they have their big festivals, like Dashain and Tihar. The whole country just has this awesome, vibrant feel to it.
Spring (around March, April):
Things are just starting to warm up nicely after winter chills out. You still get some decent, clear days, especially earlier in spring, so those mountain views are definitely on the cards. Maybe a tad more haze in the air than in autumn sometimes, but still pretty good. And if you're lucky, you might catch the rhododendrons, their national flower, blooming up in the hills. Super pretty, though you won't see a forest of them right in Kathmandu.
As you get towards the end of April and into May, it can start to get a bit hotter, and the air can get a bit thicker, kind of building up before the next rains.
Times you might want to ignore:
Monsoon (June to August, sometimes creeping into early September): Probably give this a miss for this kind of trip. It’s wet. Like, wet. Clouds will just laugh at your hopes for mountain views; it's sticky, and sometimes roads get a bit messy.
Winter (December, January, February): You can go, and the views can be amazing when it's clear. But man, it gets cold. Nagarkot at sunrise? You'll need to be seriously bundled. Kathmandu will be nippy too, especially mornings and nights.
Food and Accommodations on Tour
Nepal has a huge range of places to stay, from super basic teahouses on traveling routes (not what you're doing this time) to fancy five-star hotels. For your trip, "Approved Holidays" will have you sorted, likely in comfortable, tourist-standard hotels.
Kathmandu:
You'll likely be in or around Thamel, which is the main tourist hub. It’s buzzing, full of shops, restaurants, and a gazillion guesthouses and mid-range hotels. It's convenient for everything.
Hotels in Kathmandu will generally have en-suite bathrooms, Wi-Fi (can be a bit hit-or-miss sometimes, but usually decent in cities), and restaurants.
Nagarkot:
The hotels here are pretty much all about one thing: those stunning Himalayan views, especially at sunrise.
They range from more basic guesthouses to comfier resort-style hotels. Your tour will likely put you in a place with good viewing potential.
It'll be cooler up there, so make sure your room has adequate heating or blankets if it's a colder time of year (though autumn should be pleasant).
You’ll eat well, and you’ll have comfy places to sleep. The focus for Approved Holidays will be making sure you’re well-placed for the sights and comfortable enough to enjoy your adventure!
