Transportation in Nepal

Transportation in Nepal

Nepal provides ample means for commuting, from public buses to taxis to good old bicycles. Here is a short guide on transportation in and around Kathmandu.

Public Transport

Inexpensive and with a wide reach, the public transport system in Kathmandu packs in buses, minibuses, and microbuses that can be found at the old and new bus parks servicing different parts of the valley. Electric three-wheelers called Tempos are also a well-liked option and occupy an environmentally friendly niche.

Taxis

Metered taxis are easily recognizable by their sign and black license plates. You can hail one off the street or have a taxi called in from your hotel. Somewhat higher fares are charged at night than during the day. Alternatively, you can book a private taxi or rent a car through a travel agency.

Bicycle & Mountain Bike

Renting a mountain bike offers a cost-effective way to explore Kathmandu for any budget traveler. There are several rental shops in Thamel, Rani Pokhari, and Jhochhen offering bike rental at reasonable rates.

Long-Distance Buses

Daytime and nighttime buses leave from Kathmandu for various cities all across Nepal. Buses mostly depart from the old bus park located in Bagbazar and the new bus park in Gongabu near Balaju.

Domestic Flights

If you are traveling farther away, domestic flights are the fastest way of getting there. Kathmandu has a number of airlines, including Nepal Airlines with approximately 20 private airlines, providing scheduled as well as charter flights to major destinations within Nepal.
