The Everest region stands as Nepal’s most iconic trekking destination, and among its many routes, the Everest Base Camp Three Passes Trek is widely considered the ultimate adventure. This is not just a trek—it’s a complete Himalayan experience that takes you deep into some of the most dramatic and remote mountain landscapes on Earth.
Unlike the classic Everest Base Camp route, this trek pushes further. It leads you off the beaten path, through quiet valleys, across glaciers, and over three high mountain passes—each offering unforgettable panoramic views.
As the name suggests, the journey includes crossing three major passes above 5,000 meters: Renjo La (5,360 m), Cho La (5,330 m), and Kongma La (5,540 m). Each pass presents its own challenge, but also rewards you with breath-taking scenery that few trekkers ever get to witness.
What makes this trek even more special is that it combines the highlights of both the Everest Base Camp Trek and the Gokyo Lake Trek, while adding lesser-known trails on both sides of the region. Due to the demanding nature of the high passes, proper acclimatization and a steady pace are essential. Many experienced trekkers rank this as the best trekking route in Nepal—and for good reason.
Best Time to Go
The ideal seasons for the Everest Three Passes Trek are:
- Spring (March–May): Clear skies, blooming rhododendrons, and stable weather
- Autumn (October–November): Crisp air, excellent visibility, and perfect trekking conditions
While trekking during the monsoon season (June–early September) is possible, weather conditions can be unpredictable, and trails may be slippery.
The winter season (December–February) brings cold temperatures and potential snow-blocked passes, but also offers crystal-clear mountain views for those willing to brave the chill.
Overall, this trek is rated challenging to strenuous. It requires good physical fitness and mental endurance. It is more demanding than the standard Everest Base Camp Trek.
Trek Route & Variations
Most trekking companies, including experienced operators, follow the route anti-clockwise, which allows for better altitude acclimatization. While a clockwise route is possible, it is generally not recommended due to the steep ascent toward Renjo La.
An extra highlight of this route is the extension in the Gokyo Valley, where trekkers can explore the stunning high-altitude lakes and enjoy quieter surroundings compared to the main Everest trail.
Support & Safety
A well-organized trek includes full support from experienced guides and porters. Professional mountain guides are trained to handle high-altitude conditions and ensure the safety and comfort of every trekker.
Your trip leader will continuously monitor the group’s well-being, adjusting the pace when needed and helping everyone maximize their chances of successfully completing the trek.
Lukla Flight Delays
Flights to and from Lukla are famously unpredictable due to mountain weather conditions. Delays can occur at any time of year, but are more common during the monsoon season.
If delays happen, flights are rescheduled as soon as possible. However, in rare cases, delays may last a few days. It’s strongly recommended to keep 1–2 extra buffer days at the end of your trip, especially if you have international connections.
