Climate & Trekking Seasons of Nepal
The geographical latitude of Nepal ranges from 26° to 31°N, thus providing everything from sub-tropical southern plains to alpine northern Himalayas. Four distinct seasons largely govern the trekking and travel conditions of the country.
Seasons and Conditions in Nepal
Autumn (September – November)
- Best trekking season with mild temperatures, clear skies, and exquisite views of the mountains.
- The landscapes become golden, thus providing good photo opportunities.
- The ever-popular trekking routes of Everest, Annapurna, and Langtang become overcrowded with trekkers.
- Nights would become colder & temperature at high altitude can fall below freezing.
Winter (December – February)
- Stable weather with clear skies for lower altitude trekking.
- Heavy snowfall in higher altitude regions makes it hard for trekking.
- Great to visit Kathmandu Valley and Terai as those places would not be experiencing snow.
- Very cold nights with possible snowstorm in the Himalayas.
Spring (March – May)
- Another peak trekking season—mild temperatures, clear sky, and stunning scenery.
- Trekking trails abound with blooming rhododendrons, jasmine, and pine trees.
- The best option for high-altitude trekking, peak climbing, and expeditions.
- The lower altitudes can be warm and sometimes hot.
Summer & Monsoon (June – August)
- Constant rain and cloudy skies create humid conditions where most trails turn muddy and slippery.
- Leeches abound in the forests, while clouds obscure mountain views.
- The rain-shadow areas of Mustang and Dolpo, however, remain dry and great trekking zones.
- This season is special because of the greener pastures, blooming flowers, and active wildlife.
Trekking Condition by Altitude
Low-altitude treks (Terai, Kathmandu Valley, Chitwan): Great throughout the year, except during the Monsoon rainfall.
Trekking in mid-altitude battles (Annapurna, Langtang, Manaslu): Best in Autumn or Spring.
High-altitude treks are best in autumn, heavy snow during winter, and the monsoon affects most areas except Mustang & Dolpo.
