Best Time to Travel Tibet

Tibet, which is also popularly called "the Snowy Land," has left all shades of history and all aspects of cultural legacy shaped by absolute altitudinal beauty. Travelers were, however, shocked to discover that the state climatic conditions of Tibet are very diverse and rather more than what is expected. Regions witness very little snowfall, and even some of the most severe in winter will remain accessible to the veteran traveling crowd, who often cherish its beauty and authenticity at that time. Apart from this, that period would also have fewer tourists, making the experience much more intimate, especially in Lhasa, where the presence of Drokpas (nomads) enriches the cultural texture of the city itself.

Tibet may best be visited during this period of late spring and early summer and late autumn because of the gentle weather and the small crowds. But the months of summer, July and particularly August, with China's national holidays, are the highest domestic tourist traffic and the most jammed areas in almost every possible destination within Lhasa.

March is usually that politically critical period in Tibet, with a tendency to have severe travel restrictions. Yet, generally, the weather still would favor. April ushers in more stable and reliable weather for eastern Tibet. It's a good time to take advantage of off-peak-rate accommodation and transportation in places like Lhasa. And it is, in fact, during these months that the views of Mount Everest become most clear and photogenic for photographers.

The time between April and October is the best period for traveling to Mount Kailash to undertake pilgrimage and trekking. Of all these, the months of September and October take the prize for the best time to visit. October is also a fantastic time to visit eastern Tibet, with Lhasa and the areas around it remaining mild almost until the end of November.
