By Approved Holidays on 08 Oct, 2025

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is one of the most popular trekking destinations in Nepal, offering stunning Himalayan and dramatic landscapes, and also offers trekkers authentic Nepali Himalayan meals to trekkers. Is non-veg food available in the ABC Trek?

Yes, there will be non-veg items to be found in treks at a higher altitude, but they are not to be eaten during the trek. There is no cold storage available for refrigerators at a higher altitude, which makes meat unhealthy. The lack of cold storage makes food contamination or foodborne sickness more likely.

In lower regions like Kathmandu, Pokhara, or even Chhomrong, meat is readily available on the menu. You can have your favorite meat food.

Is Vegan Food Available on the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

Yes, vegan food options are available on the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, though they may be limited—especially at higher altitudes. Vegetarian food is prevalent everywhere in all teahouses on the trek, and most can readily be veganized by substituting some simple things (e.g., "no butter, cheese, or eggs"). Dal bhat (lentil soup with vegetables and rice), vegetable stir-fries, fried rice, noodles, soups, and Tibetan bread are all simple to adapt to vegan food.

Drinks and Hydration on the ABC Trek

It is essential to keep yourself hydrated while trekking in places of high altitude. Trekkers walk for 6-8 hours daily. Always carry a reusable bottle and water purification tablets. The trek offers cold and hot drinks to keep you energized and warm.
