Major Things to know Before Heading to Everest Base Camp Trekking

The journey of 15 days to the 120 km Himalayan trail in the Khumbu region has enticed the adventure lovers around the world, to experience the Everest Base Camp (EBC) Trekking. Best Time to Trek?

There are mainly two highly preferable seasons- spring and autumn. The season begins from March and ends in May before monsoon. The next season starts from September and ends in November after monsoon. However, if you really love to experience the beautiful adventure to EBC, then winter (December-February) is the perfect time for you. This avoids the crowd at the same time, but prepare well with essential equipment required for the trek.

Flight and Transportation

There are regular flights on the Kathmandu Lukla Kathmandu route. Mostly, the flight operations take place in the morning. After noon, there will be rare regular flights due to the weather change and wind (Sometimes, there will be flights from Manthali airport of Ramechhap instead of Kathmandu). If you want to take a road drive, it is a whole day jeep drive to Salleri and begin the trek from there. It is a way to avoid Lukla flight. 

Food/Meals

There is a wide range of menu throughout the EBC route. The recommended food is to taste typical Dal Bhat Tarkari (rice, lentil and curry)-Dal Bhat Power 24 Hour. Beside this, all Nepali cuisine, Indian, Chinese and Continental cuisine are available. As the journey mostly goes through the alpine region, hot meals like MoMo, Thukpa types of meals are extremely popular. But make sure if the meal is okay for you.

Bank and Money Exchange

There are banks and money exchange counters in some places of the EBC trekking trail. You can also use the atm service. But, the last point you can use the banking service is Namche Bazaar. You don’t have to worry if you book your trek through the trekking agency in Nepal, but for independent trekker, it is important to know. 

High Altitude Sickness

It is important to know about the high altitude sickness while trekking to Everest Base Camp. Lukla is already located in the altitude of 2800 meters. Basically, trekkers are recommended to take a couple of days rest and acclimatization breaks. Namche Bazaar is the first place to take rest at 3440 meters altitude. It is a wonderful place to explore around the town of the bustling Sherpa settlements. It is surrounded with the colorful monasteries, chhortens and mani walls. Dingbuche is another rest point in usual itinerary that is amazing to get adaptation with the alpine altitude. 

Accommodation

There are basic lodges to the luxurious hotels and resorts on the EBC Trekking trail. But all the accommodation ensures neat and clean beds and hygienic meals. Even in the basic lodges, there will be hot shower space and warm dining hall. They take extra for the extra services. Attached toilet/bathroom and luxurious beds are available in luxurious hotels and resorts. Everest View Hotel is one of the most luxurious accommodations on the route. 

About the Route

The first day, it is a gradual walk, which is easy. Then the route steeply climb up to the Namche Bazaar. It is gently uphill and then continually ascending all the way to Gorakshep and Kalapatthar. The trail is fine and wide enough, but the altitude is the main factor for the trekkers, which should not be underestimated. Getting the symptoms, you should stop or rather climb downhill.  

EBC Trekking route goes through the Sagarmatha National Park, which is a home of several endangered species of flora and fauna. So, your trek should not disturb the eco-system at all. 

You will frequently meet the herds of yaks carrying huge loads on the trail. So, being wise, please leave the enough space and stay safe. They will not harm you, but giving enough space is a wise thing to do. 

In average, you will walk 5-7 hours every day.
